BECOMING
LESS AND LESS

VIDEO INSTALLATION

Becoming Less and Less, Single channel video with sound, 11 mins, 2021

Becoming Less and Less presents decay as the ultimate interpolating force, one that constantly draws forms back out of themselves. Decay is constant, dispersive, dissipative — metabolism’s twin shadow. Decay counters the idea that anything (a body, a system, a language, etc.) can behave solely according to its own internal rules.

The artists outline ten chapters in the human quest for immortality, the desperate longing for control, and the denial of time: cellular, organismal, societal, calibration, production, reproduction, simulation, randomness, turbulence, and molecular liberation. The piece meditates on strata of decay along multiple timescales and organizational strategies, touching on the fields of cybernetics, synthetic biology, machine learning, and artificial life. Decay results from those aspects of reality that can never be fully internalized: incompressible biology, incomputable data, and irreducible complexity.
